Right from the product development phase, we in the Weidmüller laboratory start to test the components, materials and systems you plan to use. They are customised, designed perfectly for your needs and reliably tested for worldwide applications and solutions.

Quality is a tradition for us – the first Weidmüller laboratory was already established in 1953 in Königswinter. Today, around 70 technicians, engineers and scientists worldwide are working in an area of

3,500 m² in Detmold and Suzhou, China. “Every year, we deal with around 3,000 requests for quotations, draw up 1,000 lab reports and 1,500 measurement reports,” says Dr. Michael Reiniger, Head of Laboratory, about the many activities. Customers appreciate not only certified quality, but also advice from competent contacts. “Whether corrosion resistance for offshore plants or vibration and stress tests for heavy-duty connectors in trains – we develop customised tests to meet the requirements of our customers and partners.”

What makes a safety relay resistant to corrosion?

The corrosion test for the SIL 3 relay

Over 30 days, the SIL relay was put through a 4-component corrosive gas test based on the standard from the 60068 series. The result showed no corrosive effect and no functional impairments.

It is not rare for salty spray and a corrosive atmosphere containing small doses of chlorine gases or hydrogen sulphide to impact on offshore installations. The SIL relay is designed for just these situations.

HDC plug connectors from Weidmüller are corrosion- and vibration-resistant wiring connections suited to applications in energy and automation technology but most especially traffic engineering. This is proven by certificates to this effect.

Vibration test, seal integrity testing and the thermal shock procedure are some of the extreme tests which a HDC plug connector has to face. In order to assess the results, the laboratory uses an analysis technique from the world of medicine: computed tomography. The benefit of this technique is that the test item is not destroyed during assessment. Without any external influences, the impacts can be seen and documented at a glance.

How is a housing made suitable for power plants?

By training it under very high pressure

Extreme testing of Klippon® housings for hazardous areas

High pressure testing: this test confirms an IP69k level of protection. The rotating test object is subject to hot water at high pressure, applied from a very close by.

The LOCA/HELB test simulates the sub-scenario of an emergency case. The test objects are exposed to saturated water vapour, which is equivalent to an extreme increase of temperature and pressure in a very short time.

Testing the mechanical stability of the housing through impact loading indicates how the housing behaves in the event of external impact caused by falling objects.
